Res-Net
Each UIC residence hall room is equipped with high speed computer
connections. Students may request to have service activated
in
their rooms. Basic Res-Net costs $10.00/month per student (netid)
with server services providing access to some of the most commonly
used programs
available
for an additional $5.00/month.
Guide to Set-Up
This guide is intended for you, the incoming residents, so that you can have the internet already setup BEFORE
you get to the residence halls. We promise to make this guide as easy, non-technical, and pain free as possible.
First, we need to determine what type of internet best fulfills your needs in the Residence Halls. You can use Wireless Internet (Odyssey for Windows XP and Secured W2 for Vista), or wired Internet (Res-Net). The way to determine this is quite simple. Do you have a Wireless Card? If you have a Wireless card, you will most likely wish to use the wireless network. If you don’t have a wireless card, you will have to use Res-Net.
To help all incoming students prepare accessing wireless and wired
internet from within the Residence Halls here are some online resources
that will assist you through the preparation and installation:
Windows XP (Wireless):

Windows Vista (Wireless):

Res-Net
Everyone in the Residence Halls has the ability to use Res-Net. No matter if you are using a mac, Windows XP or Windows Vista. To use Res-Net you will need at least 1 Ethernet Cord. When you talk to your soon to be roommate over the summer, be sure to ask them how they plan on connecting to the Internet.
I am sure you are asking, “Why can’t I bring my own router to use the Internet?” Using a router to connect to the school’s Internet is NOT ALLOWED! If you are caught using a router, your Internet privileges will be suspended. Plus, who wants to spend an extra $50 on a router when Campus Housing provides a free hub?
Ok, so say you didn’t think you were going to need a hub, but when you get here you realize “I need a Hub!” That’s ok, Campus Housing has you covered! If you arrive to the Residence Halls and realize you need a Hub, you will be able to check them out at the area office! If you do not know where the Area office is, you R.A. or Peer Mentor will be more than happy to guide you there!
