Every year, UIC sends a delegation of approximately 20 students and advisors to a conference at the state, regional, and national level. Each conference has its own theme, and the delegation must make four different items to bring to the conference, which all contain the UIC sub-theme. On the first day of the conference, the delegation performs a "roll call," which is a dance or a skit developed by each school that is presented to all the schools. In addition to this, the delegation also creates a banner (normally made of felt), a box display, and clothespins to trade with the other schools. A special group that UIC has for the conferences is the "Spiriteers," which are enthusiastic delegates in charge of creating numerous spirit items for UIC delegates to wear, make noise with, and simply stand out from other schools at each conference. Also during these conferences, delegates attend many programs on all different topics that they bring back to UIC and put on for their floor and peers. Not only are delegates able to attend these programs, but, if chosen, they are able to present a program at the conference. Additionally, the conference host school organizes fun activities for all the delegates each night like a game room, social hangout areas, hospitality rooms full of all sorts of food, and a final dance.
While the delegates are attending programs, the Communications Coordinators are in business. During this time, the CCs listen to bids for different awards and vote on them. At the end of each conference, there is an award ceremony and catered dinner at which all of the winners are announced.
The Illinois Residence Hall Association (IRHA) conference is a statewide conference hosting several schools from Illinois. This year IRHA will be held at Western Illinois University on February 8-10. The theme for this year is "Where the Wild Things Are." The Great Lakes Affiliate of College and University Residence Halls (GLACURH) is our regional conference. The mascot of our state is a polar bear by the name of MOWII, that is derived from many schools in the region containing the states: Michigan, Ontario, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Indiana. This year, we will be traveling to University of Windsor, Ontario, CANADA from November 2-4. This year, the theme for GLACURH is "I BeLeaf." Note: In order to attend the GLACURH conference, you must have a passport. The National Association of College and University Residence Halls (NACURH) is the national conference that hosts a huge number of schools from around the country as well as Canada, Mexico, Australia, China, and Qatar. Last year NACURH was held at the University of Colorado Boulder, while this year we will be going to University of Pittsburg in Pennsylvania from May 31 - June 3. During this conference, bids won at the regional level are presented and are voted upon to win on a national level. For this year, the theme is "Your University, Your University, Our World."
