Special Interest Housing Communities, 2007–2008

Share ideas, study, work on projects and have fun with your classmates in housing focused especially for people sharing your major.

Architecture Floor: CMW 3 West and JST 7, Tower C

This area is designed for students pursuing an interest in architecture. Students are able to support each other in course work, class assignments and projects. Activities include field trips, events to put your knowledge to the test, and interacting with faculty.

Arts Floor: CMW 3 East and JST 3, Tower C

Students interested in an active and artistically diverse environment live together in the Arts Wing. During the year, there will be numerous events that encompass a wide variety of artistic media planned by memebrs of the community: trips to museums, plays, performances; meals with faculty; or hands-on workshops.

Close to classroom buildings, theater, and studio spaces, this floor offers places to work on projects in the hall, flks to practice with, go to class with, study with, and bounce ideas off. It’s a place to call home—full of cool, quirky, intelligent, creative and artistic people.

Engineering Floor & Women in Science and Engineering: CMW 4 East

This floor is ideal for students majoring in engineering. In-hall study grous will be available. Activities include field trips, events to put your knowledge to the test, and interacting with faculty.

For women interested in science and engineering, the UIC WISE Wing offers students a chance to live with other women STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) majors. The UIC WISE Program meets with the students formally at least once a month for dinner. During these dinners, we might visit with a faculty member from UIC or another institution. We might also just take the time to relax and get to know each other better.

The UIC WISE program helps to facilitate study groups that meet in the WISE Wing. All parts of the program are planned in conjuction with the women living in the WISE Wing.

Honors: JST Tower 2B

These floors are very popular and comprise of students who have qualified for the Honors College. Activities include dinners with faculty, study groups, and social events.

Pre-Med and Pre-Nursing Wing: CMW 4 West, PSR 3

Interact with faculty in an out-of-classroom setting via workshops, seminars, and field trips designed to enhance your academic experience. Get job search, interviewing, and graduate and medical school information.

Floor activities will include an introduction to health-related careers, networking over lunch with health professionals, and touring local hospitals and alternative care facilities.

Nursing Floor: SSR 16

The Nursing floor is an enhanced groups academic living environment for pre-nursing and nursing students. This specialized living arrangement eases the transition for nursing students to campus life. Benefits to students living on the Nursing Floor may include such things as in-hall floor studeny groups, in-hall test preparation, career planning, personal development workshops, tutoring, and other on-site nursing resources depending on the needs of the students.

LAS Career Explorations Floor: JST 4, Tower C

The Liberal Arts and Science Career Exploration floor’s mission is to bring together classroom and living experiences to provide opportunities for students to discover areas of interest and ability and how they relate to academic majors and careers.

Students entering the Liberal Arts and Sciences General Curriculum may find the Career Exploration floor a particularly supportive and stimulating environment in which to begin their UIC experience. Residents from all majors can utilize the resources to identify and prepare for careers. Get job search, interviewing and graduate school information.

Business Leaders of Tomorrow Floor: JST 6, Tower C

Housing men and women in different rooms on the same floor, the business floor is for students in the College of Business. Programs on the business floor will include explorations of co-op, internship, and career opportunities in business as well as opportunities for interaction with faculty members from the College of Business and business professionals in the local Chicagoland community.

Men’s First-Year Experience Floor: CMS 3

First-Year Experience floors offer a unique opportunity for new students looking for a strong connection to campus life. These resident communities have been created to facilitate a successful transition from high school life to college living.

Residents will be encouraged to participate in a wide range of events, programs and activities—both social and educational—that will enhance their learning outside the classroom.

Women’s First-Year Experience Floor: CMS 2, CMW 2 East

This community is designed to provide students with a residential experience based on leadership that focuses on self-development, communication skills, projects and program effectiveness, and group dynamics. The program helps students identify, develop, and practice their leadership skills.

Students interested in FYE do not need to have a formal eladership role in any organization. Participation is encouraged from any student who wishes to be a part of an energetic community committed to making a difference.

President’s Award (PAP): CTY 1 SW

The university president initiated the President’s Award Program (PAP) to encouraged talented African-American and Latino students to remain in Illinois. In 1991, Native American students were also targeted for PAP.

A broad range of support services is available for PAP students. Those services include academic advising and tutorial support in college-based settings such as the College of Business Administration, College of Engineering, Honors College, and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Additionally, three support programs—the Latin American Recruitment and Education Services (LARES), the African-American Academic Network (AAAN), and the Native American Support Program (NASP)—also provide assistance. PAP students may elect to live in the residence hall where a floor has been designated for them, encouraging a stronger bond among program participants.
