What to Do If…

I’m having trouble with my Cable TV.

First, try to see if you can troubleshoot your Cable TV problem online using this guide. If you still can not resolve the problem, then submit a work order and someone will come out and take a look.

My telephone isn’t working.

First, make sure you try all the telephone jacks in your room. Some rooms have a few inactive jacks from years ago. If you still need help please visit the Building Operations desk in your building.

I’m having trouble with Res-Net (connecting to the Internet in my room).

ResNet is run by the university’s Academic Computing and Communications Center (ACCC). To get help, call them at (312) 413-0003, or 3-0003 on campus.

I’m having trouble getting along with my roommate.

The key to a successful relationship between you and your room or cluster mate(s) is to have open communication. First you need to determine the difference between your needs and your wants. What do you need in a living space and what would you like to see happen; in other words, you could need to get at least 8 hours of sleep to do well on your exam in your 8 a.m. class, but you would have a hard time saying that you NEED to live with someone who shares your taste in music. Often making this distinction will help you recognize where you can be a little flexible and capable of compromise. It will also help you to recognize your roommate’s wants and needs.

Then, you need to clearly express what your needs are in a living space, what your wants are. You should recognize that roommates don’t need to be best friends (and often times the best roommate situations are among people who aren't), but they do need to be able to communicate what they need to be successful students and feel comfortable in their own room. Your RA has had special training to help roommates communicate about these issues, and can even suggest topics, or propose how to write a "roommate contract" to make sure that everyone agrees what each others' needs are and are willing to meet them.

The candy machine/Pepsi machine ate my dollar.

You can visit the service desk inside CCC or CIU and request a refund. You will be asked to fill out a form with information about the machine you used.

Something in my room is broken and needs to be fixed.

You need to fill out a work order. Stop by your area office and fill one out, or fill a work order out online.

I need to see a doctor.

All university students can go to UIC Family Medicine when in need of a doctor. A common misconception is that you need UIC insurance to visit the Family Medicine Center. All students pay a mandatory student health fee that gives them access to the center.

For more information, visit the Student Health Center web site.
