Community Development
Residence Life Goals
The Campus Housing department is embarking on a bold new initiative
to work collaboratively with students to build real communities
in residence. The centerpiece of our new initiative is The Community
Standards Model, which is modified from the University of Nevada
at Las Vegas. The model challenges students to reach consensus
agreements, support and challenge peers, and communicate within
the context of a learning community. Our efforts are guided by
principles that will lead to empowered students who are responsible
for their own communities. Using these principles will help us
achieve our goals. Both our principles and goals are outlined below.
Guiding Principles
- To enhance student development
- To create a strong and supportive community
- To support academic success and integration
- To provide quality service and leadership
- To promote diversity awareness and interaction
Goals
- Residents will know and care for one another.
- Residents will learn cooperatively by taking the same classes and studying together.
- Resident will plan programs and activities interdependently with Campus Housing.
- Residents will build and support their communities by using community standards and peer influence.
Residence Life Program Model
The Residence Life Program Model began several years ago with
the introduction of the Community Standards Model. This year
we will continue the evolution of our program model with its
emphasis on community development and identity development. This
evolution
doesn't mean we abandon Community Standards. On the contrary,
we continue to use Community Standards as a tool to further our
program and departmental goals as we continue to enhance our
program. The other unique additions to our model include three
focal points:
scholarship, leadership, and citizenship/civility.
